The Cave
The Cave
an original poem by Kristen Boyer
They say that the world is beautiful, perfect the way that it is
With it's sadness and judgement, anger and self-hatred
Directed at others and hidden behind a mask of lies
They say that this is perfect, they say that this is the way
But I am not so sure I want this world the way that it is
My heart knows that something better lies without or perhaps within
So in the deep of the night I am awoken by the moon
She tells me to enter the deep and fumble through the dark
Through a tiny opening in the earth
The cave swallows me in with it's jagged mouth, it's sharp teeth
I fumble, I bruise my knees tripping through the dark
I cannot see the moon but I hear her voice loud and clear
She tells me to trust, she tells me I'm home in the dark
I must go within to come into my light
I trip and I fall over the rocks in the cold, coming through the belly of the earth
I fumble past the stones and I fall and scrape my arms
I am bloodied, I am broken, I am whole
And the moon, she keeps on shining, even when I think I can't see
But I know that she's still there, above me, guiding in my mind
Then finally, when I'm on the verge of giving up and giving in
I see the light at the end of the cave
I when I smile in relief and I recognize dear moon
I emerge to find that she was only a reflection of the sun
Even brighter and better on the other side
